A very well organised Guernsey restricted Championship Bristol to only a few chances in the first-half. Bobby Reid’s 36th minute goal proved the decisive moment of the Mike Thomas Trophy dominated by the visitors.
However, had it not been for the efforts of the fantastic Josh Addison, the score would have been very different. Addison had a brilliant game in Guernsey’s goal.
Bristol Manager Lee Johnson was able to field a different outfield ten in each half, with only goalkeeper Max O’Leary completing the full 90 minutes between. He kept out Reid’s downward header from point-blank range and continued to frustrate the visitors, who dominated possession throughout.
Addison held on to another effort from Reid soon after, before diving acrobatically to keep out a looping attempt from Centre Back Jens Hegeler.
City finally broke Guernsey down several minutes before half-time when Bobby Reid latched on to a long pass from Korey Smith. The midfielder’s delightful first touch took him around Addison, who was quick off his line, leaving him Reid an opportunity he couldn’t miss.
Minutes later it could have been two, Addison saved well with his legs to keep out another Reid attempt and then saved with his fingertips as Josh Brownhill sent a curling shot towards the far corner. Addison’s saves sent his team in only trailing Championship Side Bristol by the one goal.
City changed made ten changes at the break. City had a few chances to test Addison but failed to capitalise on their chances in the opening stages of the second half. Addison continued the second half where he left off, denying Smith with a powerful shot on 70 minutes.
Guernsey’s best chance came moments after following a mix up at the back presented Guernsey substitute Paris Pereira with a chance to get on the scoresheet but Pereira hit his shot straight at O’Leary.
Addison parried out a swerving attempt from Bryan, before Jamie Dodd hacked clear before McCoulsky could tuck in the rebound.
There was one more moment of glory for Addison, Guernsey’s star man, Addison somehow kept out a goalbound Aden Flint header at the death, pushing it on to the crossbar.
