2018/19: Our season in numbers

Date Posted: 10/06/2019

GuernseyFC.com crunches the numbers from another gruelling season for the Green Lions that ultimately ended in a successful battle for survival in Bostik South East.

With there being eight less league games in 2018/19 compared to the previous campaign, it was always going to be difficult to beat the previous season’s wins and points totals, and Guernsey finished the season in 18th place with seven wins and 30 points from 36 games. Another defeat, against Thamesmead Town, was expunged from the Isthmian League records due to the South London side ceasing to exist. Next season will provide a truer comparison for improvement.

The Green Lions set a new club record of 15 games without a win between 15th December and the end of the season, but the draws they ground out just about enough to keep them up on the final day, thanks to Paris Pereira’s 90th-minute header ensuring they stayed up on merit rather than only because Greenwich Borough had points deducted.

The season figures were as follows:

League

Home: P 18, W 3, D 3, L 12, F 24 A 41, GD -17, PTS 12
Away: P 18, W 4, D 6, L 9, F 26, A 39, GD -13, PTS 18
Total: P 36, W 7, D 9, L 21, F 50, A 80, GD -30, PTS 30

(NB: Does not include 3-0 away defeat to Thamesmead Town, October 2018)

Appearances: We used 26 players in 2018/19, comfortably the lowest amount of players Tony Vance has used in a single season and there were six players (Fazakerley, Dodd, Dodds, Loaring, Stanton and Frank Tobin), who missed just three games or less. Two players – Will Fazakerley and Carlos Canha – made their debuts for the club, meaning 85 players have now represented GFC in our eight-year history. Fazakerley’s 37 appearances made him the first ever GFC player to have appeared in every single match in a season. The fact that the Green Lions have a young team coming into a new era was shown by the an example that senior players Simon Geall, Ryan-Zico Black and Craig Young made only 17 appearances between them, albeit the latter due to injury.

All appearances were in the league:
37: Fazakerley.
36: Dodd, Dodds.
35 : Loaring, Stanton.
34 : F Tobin.
30: De La Mare.

27: L Mahon, Pereira, Rihoy.
24: Gauvain.
23: Dyer, Skillen.
21: K Marsh.
17: K Mahon.
16: Smith.
7: Geall, Young.
3: Black.
1: Fallaize, Hardill, Kelly, Le Tissier, R Marsh, H Tobin.

Goals:

15: Loaring.
7: Canha.
6: Fazakerley.
5: Rihoy.
4: Gauvain.
3: Dodds.
2: L Mahon, Pereira.
1: De La Mare, K Mahon, Skillen, Smith, F Tobin.
1 own goal.

Two players (Will Fazakerley and Carlos Canha) got their first goals for GFC this season, not forgetting Kieran Mahon getting his first goal for four-and-a-half years to set his team on the way to a vital draw on the final day of the season that ensured survival.

Guernsey FC have now played 378 competitive matches since our formation, winning 172, drawing 66 and losing 140. We have scored 810 goals - with the milestone 800th netted by Frank Tobin against Herne Bay in March – and conceded 670. The Green Lions have been victorious in 153 league games – the milestone 150th coming against Herne Bay at Footes Lane in November – drawing 61 and losing 129, scoring 729 times and shipping 615.

Other notable milestones during the season included both Jamie Dodd and Matt Loaring passing Dominic Heaume’s appearance record, with the former now being the clubs all-time record holder with 291. Thomas Dodds and Paris Periera both reached a century of appearances for the club. Dave Rihoy grabbed his 75th goal and passed Ross Allen’s apperances to move fourth in the all-time list. The fixture at East Grinstead Town in September was the first time ever in nearly 350 games in our history that not a single player from our first ever matchday squad against Knaphill in 2011 was featured on the teamsheet, showing a new era was well and truly on the way.
